Shigeru Ban: The Paper Log House at The Glass House

What’s Happening

A collaboration between Shigeru Ban Architects, The Glass House, and The Cooper Union, with ABOVE THE FOLD, Shigeru Ban’s original design for the Paper Log House constructed in Kobe, Japan in 1995 will be be on view April 15th through December 15th 2024. The 14 by 14-foot enclosure is made of paper tubes, wood and milk crates, and has been deployed to provide temporary housing for victims of disaster across five continents over the last 30 years. Supported by The Japan Foundation, New York and other sponsors, the structure was fabricated and assembled by several dozen architecture students in collaboration with Shigeru Ban Architects’ New York team on March 19th 2024. Aside from responding to urgent crises in Hawaii, this is the first time that the Paper Log House is being built and shown in North America since 2018.

What’s Happening

Initiated in 2019 and completed in 2024, ABOVE THE FOLD curated the architecture and landscape design team for the client behind Detroit’s new art center and district. It marks the agency’s second built project in the city since True North in 2017. It is the design team’s—comprising architecture and landscape architecture—first built work in Detroit and the Midwest U.S., significantly advancing their international profiles. In addition to AD, the project has been covered in The Spaces, Archinect, The Architect’s Newspaper, The Detroit News, The Financial Times, and The New York Times, among many others.


What We Do

In a world defined by context and content, ABOVE THE FOLD works at the intersection of creative direction, business development, and public relations to make contemporary architecture (and design teams) more accessible.

Founded in 2012 by John Patrick, ABOVE THE FOLD has a history of advancing and elevating the profiles, practices, and portfolios of architecture and design firms while providing a mix of services to better serve the needs and economics of architecture — a notoriously difficult, slow, and costly creative exercise.

While performing this work the agency’s roster, insight, and experience have served as a resource to clients, consultants, collaborators, and media interested in what’s next, new, and happening.

Taking it one step further, in 2023, ATF Images was formed with a strong understanding of the power of images to design, communicate, engage, and construct. Our roster now includes a professional visualization/rendering studio and an architectural photographer. We connect them to clients in architecture, design, real estate, creative, and media companies for assignments around the world.
